Let's explore Counselling...
'Even the strongest person can feel weak some days'
Counselling and you
IMPORTANT update on COVID19 (January 2021)
In light of all the uncertainty around the Coronavirus, I am mindful people may need that element of consistency now more than ever. Under guidelines from my accrediting body, therapy needs to be remote during this time. However their are exceptions and I am able to see some individuals in my practice in extenuating circumstances, but we will need to assess this need beforehand. I have taken all the necessary steps to keep both my clients and myself safe in my practice and am happy to talk you through the steps I have incorporated should you wish. I am still providing online therapy through a platform which will allow us to still have that face to face interaction. This method will allow the sessions to continue as normal, with the only difference being we won't be in the same room. All you will need will be an internet or 3G/4G mobile connection along with a phone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer etc. I will of course continue to offer telephone counselling for those who prefer this method. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions and I hope we all find some form of normality soon.

It doesn't matter who we are or what we do, sometimes we reach a point where we can no longer handle the situation we are in. Feelings of despair, despondency and hopelessness overcome us and it can be difficult to see a way out. We don't always have people around us who we feel comfortable talking to. Sometimes we are afraid we may look weak so instead opt to repress our feelings or handle it on our own, which can make things even worse.
What is counselling and how do I know if I need it?
Counselling is sometimes referred to as the 'talking cure', in that it basically involves an individual/couple sitting down with a therapist and talking through issues which may be causing them distress. These could be long term problems or issues which have recently arisen. Only you can tell if you are at a point where counselling would be of benefit to you. If you are persistently feeling that things are getting on top of you and this is having a negative impact on your daily life, then counselling provides an opportunity to explore these feelings in a safe and confidential environment.
What will counselling do for me?
It's not always easy to make sense of what we are supposed to do and how we are supposed to feel. There are many influences in our lives from family members through to our work colleagues, but ultimately you are you and that's what makes you unique. Counselling can help you to learn about yourself and how you can cope moving forward. When it comes to 'us', we are highly subjective and can often miss little things which may explain our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Through counselling a therapist can help you to identify some of these things and locate your own coping mechanisms enabling you to once again feel content and in control.
What problems can counselling help me with?
Counselling can help with a range of problems such as stress, depression, anxiety, bereavement, addictions, eating disorders, relationship problems etc. In my experience these are usually the effect of an underlying cause and it's this cause we will work together in therapy to identify and address. I offer a confidential and non-judgmental environment where you can explore your feelings and emotions safely.
Choosing the right therapist
A key part of therapy is choosing a therapist who works for you. Building the therapeutic relationship is an important part of the process and the first step is choosing a therapist who you believe you can work with; someone with whom you will feel comfortable discussing sensitive and emotive subjects, exploring your feelings and fears.
Some of my clients have kindly detailed their experience of working with me on Google. You can read their thoughts here
